Weighted blankets are an impressive and increasingly sought-after item for achieving deep, seamless sleep – something many people struggle with. Of course, I don’t have to explain the impact that sleep, or a lack there of, has on you and your everyday, but there are some important benefits of a good sleep that I’d like to highlight.
Sleep is an interesting thing. Did you know that we still don’t really understand its biological motivation? We can note, however, a substantial list of benefits that a good night’s sleep secures. While asleep, our brains form new pathways for learning and remembering, and maintains them so that we can create memories and sharpen our focus. It affects how the neurons in our brains communicate with each other, and a recent study suggests it is essentials for removing toxins that build up in the brain. As well as keeping us sharp, sleep is hugely instrumental in upholding our physical health, and a pattern of poor-quality sleep can increase the risk of health issues; from high blood pressure to cardiovascular issues to obesity. All of that to say – a good night’s sleep is a form of self-care, and it can be difficult for those to struggle with it to reconcile. Below, we’re going to run through just what the weighted blanket is, the many benefits of the handy down-time companions, and how they can help to achieve increased relaxation and decreased stress by promoting quality sleep.
What is a weighted blanket?
In a nutshell, weighted blankets are exactly what they sound like. Employing tiny plastic pellets or glass beads, the blanket aims to apply deep pressure stimulation to the body in an effort to increase serotonin and melatonin levels, while reducing stress via lowering cortisol levels. The number of beads of pellets determines your blankets weight; some people prefer a light pressure, while others are more comfortable with an increased weight. The general rule of thumb is to choose a blanket that is around 10% of your body weight. At OHS, we typically offer a variation of weights and sizes across our range so that the perfect choice for you and your needs in available. We are also pleased to offer alternate options for both kids and adults, and recommend you shop accordingly – especially for children, as excessive weight can have adverse effects.
Who is it for and what are the benefits?
Generally speaking, a weighted blanket can be beneficial for anyone, but it can definitely help out some people more than others depending on a range of factors. As mentioned above, the blankets are renown for assisting those who struggle with both falling asleep and staying asleep. Many kids, for example, experience increased tossing and turning during the night, often resulting in inconsistent sleep. The weighted blanket’s added pressure works to prevent restlessness with kids and adults alike, and many customers of OHS have been delighted with their improved sleep as a result of using these blankets.
“WORKS LIKE A DREAM. Bought this for myself after ridicule from my family, and after they tried it, I ended up buying another one for my son and my dad. They can't believe how much easier it is now to fall asleep and stay asleep. I highly recommend this, and for a great price. They are amazing!” – Ann-Marie
Secondly, weighted blankets are said to work wonders with those who experience restless leg syndrome (RLS). Similar to how the blankets assists with sleep, the added pressure on the body triggers a process referred to as Deep Touch Pressure Therapy (DTP), which produces a calming effect and, in many cases, promotes relaxation and mitigates the urge to move the legs. This in turn allows for a more comprehensive sleep experience.
“BRILLIANT! I suffer with RLS (restless leg syndrome) and this blanket helps me from getting cold as I kick a lot in my sleep. I got the heaviest and largest, and wow! So cheap to buy yet the quality is top stuff! Highly recommended!!” – Heather
Weighted blankets are often synonymous with assisting those with anxiety, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, sensory issues, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. While we recommend talking with an occupational therapist, or a paediatrician if applicable, many have commented on how the experience of using a weighted blanket has helped calm them down and prompted often-sought after relaxation. The blanket's pressure can mimic the calming sensation of a hug, which can activate the parasympathetic nervous system and triggers the release of “feel-good” hormones like oxytocin. Simultaneously, as mentioned previously, this reduces stress hormones and can lead to boosted feelings of contentment. Essentially, the blanket aims to prompt a sense of security. However, it should be noted that while some people have fantastic experiences with weighted blankets, they can’t be and shouldn't be considered cure-alls or sole treatments.
“WOW! Both my granddaughters are neurodivergent with anxieties. The result of purchasing and hoping it may help has blown my expectations out of the water! We had no disturbed sleep pattern, no nightmares, bright eyed and busy tailed this morning with smiles all around!” – K
Lastly, weighted blankets have been complimented for their ability to ease the effects of fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia can cause widespread tenderness in the body, resulting in fatigue, sleep issues, and cognitive issues. The blankets are helpful in reducing the stress associated with the condition, as well as promoting sensory regulation; the consistent pressure can provide a grounding sense of stability. Notably, selecting the right weight for you is imperative for optimal results in tackling similar issues.
“WONDERFUL! I tried it for a couple nights and found it eased my symptoms of fibromyalgia. I have a great night’s sleep now, and I find it really cosy. I recommend these blankets, great price too!” – Lesley
