Springs triumph over winter is a relief for many. I know I can speak to letting out a breath I barely knew I was holding once I notice that the sun has risen before I get to work. I have heard the sentiment before that spring has another advantage over winter, that being its legitimacy as the real “New Year”. Prior to 1752 in England, Wales, and Ireland, we recognised the new year as commencing on the 25th of March on the Feast of Annunciation. There is something very appropriate, I think, about the idea of the new year being in spring; the year’s quarter celebrated for rebirth and regrowth, characterised by buds on shrubs and buzzing bees and inaugural life. It beats the adamant stiffness of January, when we barely notice any change at all.
As the landscape on your route to work shifts and temperatures slowly creep upwards, that uplifting change can very easily be reflected within your home. In the spirit of leaving winter behind, bid adieu to winter’s heavy textures and deep hues and consider incorporating a range of bright colours into your rooms. Colour has a powerful impact on mood and energy, making it a simple yet transformative tool for refreshing your home. Bold bright colours inject energy and optimism, working to make your living areas feel alive and dynamic. Soft, bright pastel tones like powdery blues and lilac bring a sense of calm to a room, great for bedrooms. Perhaps you’re drawn more to spring’s signature botanical colours and prints, such as sage and earthy terracotta that connects your space with the outdoors. Or bold, bright hues that excite like the season. Below, we are going to run through how small, inexpensive updates to your rooms can make a major effect that’ll secure a sense of renewal from indoors to out.
Room to Room Inspiration
Living Room
For me, the living room should exude exactly that: life. At the heart of the home, we can find ourselves unwinding, entertaining, and spending slow Sunday mornings, and so your space should be an uplifting and versatile room for everyone who finds themselves in the pleasure of your company. Swapping out winter’s heavier tones for brighter and poppier hues instantly breathes new life into a space. I recommend cheerful shades like ochre, perfect for adding warmth and vibrancy, paired with deeper hues like burgundy for depth, balanced with sage and soft blues for a sense of calm.
Incorporating colour into your rooms can be done in many ways, but I usually like to keep it simple with a selection of cushions and throws. Replacing my cushion covers has become a little too easy, but who can resist a room refresh? Simply choose some bright covers that speak to you this spring and swap out the moody winter tones for instantly energising alternatives. As well as choosing the perfect cushions for you, throws are equally as transformative when adjusting your space for spring. A lightweight throw draped over the sofa or armchair adds style and practicality year-round. If you fancy taking it a step further, a statement rug in a bold shade will make all the difference. Lastly, a few little touches will cement the spring/summer vibe – think brushed clay pots with flowers, stacks of colourful reading material, tall candles and holders. With a few simple swaps your living room will feel lighter, brighter, and brand new.
Bedroom
There is no better place to embrace the fresh start of spring than the bedroom. While I may have gone a little overboard on my collection of teddy and faux fur this winter, all good things get tucked away in storage boxes until we need them again. In my room, spring means light and breathable bedding paired with mood-boosting pops of colour. Options that bring you to feel that your space is seasonal and inviting are ultimately the goal. Duvet covers in bright and airy colours instantly draw the eye, while loud patterns and finishes introduce an exciting note to the room. Layer crisp sheets with lightweight throws and contrasting cushions to keep things cosy yet breathable – great for a night in regardless of temperature.
Beyond bedding, a spring refresh is my annual excuse to declutter and create a calmer, more open space to relax in. Clever storage solutions – underbed organisers, chic storage ottomans and stools, fabric baskets – keep your new, bright space neat without compromising on style. I recommend boucle ottomans – glamorous and functional room additions that hide what we want out of view while adding some texture to the room. A tidy bedroom isn’t just visually appealing, but it sets the tone for restful evenings and mornings. Consider how a few room additions can refine your downtime and uplift it to reflect the season itself.
Spring is all about new beginnings, and I find that that starts at home. Whether you’re only swapping out a few soft furnishings or giving your room some space with useful and stylish storage solutions, helping your home do what it does best is always in. So, as the days – at long last – start to get longer and warmer, why give your spaces a little lift?
