OHS Uni Essentials: Affordable Bedding, Storage, and Décor

You’ve just been accepted onto your dream course at university and your start date is fast approaching, congratulations! What a huge achievement. I remember that feeling so well, and with it the sudden and daunting question: What am I meant to bring with me to survive my first year at uni? Whilst this can be the most exciting time of your life, you may feel overwhelmed with all the items that need to be packed away to bring with you.

I know when I first moved into my first ever uni room, I absolutely over packed… so let me tell you EXACTLY what you need to bring with you to ensure you’re creating the perfect space to come home to after attending those lectures all day (or for spending all day in bed hungover, let’s not pretend that this won’t be you at some point).

Affordable bedding

Affordable, practical and stylish essentials is our forte, so let me share a list of essentials that I wish I had added to my packing list before I moved to uni for the first time. Best believe that when it comes to bedding, we’ve got you covered.

Making sure my bed was a safe, comfy space was super important when I first moved, we don’t want to be turning up to lectures or house parties sleep deprived now do we! It’s also important you have good quality bedding which is also durable and easy to care for (I know exactly what those shared washing machines are like…)

Here are my top bedding choices for a comfy, cosy bed that doesn’t break the bank:

  • Of course, a fresh duvet cover set is a must for any new uni student. Shop a collection with with colours and prints in abundance, where you will find something for everyone.
  • Coverless duvets are convenient but also provide comfort. They allow you to easily change up your bedding with complementary colours on each side. This is the most convenient option for anyone who regularly likes to change up your space if you fancy a change through the year as the seasons change.
  • University can sometimes feel slightly lonely at first, I promise it gets better. Weighted blankets relieve stress and are just like a big warm hug from a loved one, which can be exactly what you need as first year students. The Fluffy Faux Fur Weighted Blanket would be my suggestion to snuggle under on chilled evenings.
  • If your mattress was anything like mine at university (hard and uncomfortable) another essential item is a mattress topper. They just provide that added comfort and add a layer of protection. Our Teddy Thermal Mattress Topper is perfect for making your bed extra comfy and warm.

Storage Solutions

First year uni rooms aren’t known be the most spacious things in the world, and it’s important to utilise the space that you do have so that you don’t feel cramped in your new environment. These are some things that I did to enhance my space and make sure I had room for all my belongings:

  • If you want your bits and bobs out of sight and out of mind, underbed storage is such a great way to do this. Although still being easily accessible, everything you don’t reach for often is out the way and not taking up any space.
  • Double feature products like storage stools are great as storage AND seating. Our Boucle Storage Hairpin Stool was a great addition to my room, perfect for storing the odd bits that would usually contribute to clutter - pens, highlighers, books. For getting ready for the club or storing my excessive shoe collection, storage ottomans and stools were a lifesaver for keeping my room clean of mess.
  • Over the door hangers will be your saviour! Make the most of your over the door space to hang dressing gowns, coats and towels.

You’re a student, you don’t have time to sit and organise everything when you’re knee deep in exams and course work, so here are some tips that helped me maintain an organised living space:

  • Have monthly declutter sessions, set aside some time each week to declutter your space. I can guarantee you it will declutter your mind at the same time.
  • Seasonal rotation: Rotate seasonal items storing off-season clothing and decorations in under bed storage or back at home.
  • Create dedicated zones: Establish a study zone, relaxation zone and a kitchen zone. Establishing a specific area for studying, relaxing and cooking will allow you to store all relevant products in their dedicated spots.
  • Personalise without cluttering: Choose a few decorative pieces that add personality without overwhelming the space. opt for decorative items that serve purpose, like stylish storage boxes or aesthetically pleasing organisers.

Décor and Living Essentials

You may be a good few miles away from home like I was, and there’s nothing worse than feeling like your space isn’t homely. It's a good idea to add some finishing touches to make your room feel like a home away from home. This can be little touches like pillows to fairy lights to warm fluffy blankets. I simply wanted my room to be as comfy and cosy as possible, I think at one point I had about 4 different throws draped across my bed which was way too many! Picking a neutral colour throw is great for ensuring this will match your décor throughout the seasons. For example, our Faux Fur Two Tone Throw is the perfect material to snuggle under for those pre night out naps. You’ve got to just about keep yourself alive, so I doubt adding anything else into the mix to look after is going to be any good for you! Luckily artificial plants are the best way to add a little touch of greenery, without having to worry if it’s been watered in the last week. Something like the OHS Palm Leaf Tree is such a good alternative if you’re into your plants, but don’t need that extra responsibility of keeping something else alive. Lastly, chair and sofa covers were absolute essentials for my entire uni experience. Available in different colours and styles, I found covers fabulous for preserving the integratity of our sofas and chairs as well as elevating their look.
