Making your home great for guests without a guest room
You’ve grocery shopped and bought their favourite snacks, the activities are scheduled in, and your guests are on their way! Everyone wants to make our guests feel welcome, but it can feel a little trickier when you don’t have your own guest room. There are still so many ways to give your guests comfort during their stay with you though, so we’ve outlined a few of them for the next time you find yourself in a full house.
Comfort
When having guests over to stay, comfort is key. A lot of the time, it can be more difficult to sleep and get comfortable when away from home and staying somewhere new, so it’s a good idea to provide your guests with bedding. With many affordable options from OHS, it’s not such a grand thing to have an extra set in tucked away in the wardrobe just in case, but it’s made even easier with the new coverless duvets, which don’t require any separate cover or insert, and instead are ready and washed as one.
Similarly, having an extra pillow or two just for guests really helps visitors feel like they have a cherished place in your home while sharing your space, and adding some comfortable throws ensures they won’t get too cold at night! It’s also a good idea to make sure the room (in terms of light and temperature) is closer to how they have it at home.
Storage
Something that can’t be overlooked when you have guests that don’t have their own separate room is storage for their belongings. You won’t want your living room feeling cluttered, but guest will have personal items that they need to access without going in and out of their suitcase all the time. It’s a good idea to have some spare storage, for instance stylish storage ottomans are versatile pieces of furniture that double as fabulous storage solutions. Guest can store their clothes and other things without your space becoming an open wardrobe. You can even set up a fabric wardrobe for guests to store their clothes, which can be taken down and stored away once you have your living room back!
Sleep Accessories
A sweet touch would be to give them an eye mask to use, maybe some earplugs if they will be in an environment with a lot of outside noise or where others must walk through. This way you can show them that their quality of sleep is important to you, and it could be a little take home gift! OHS has a set that includes a soft scrunchy, a hot water bottle, an eye mask, and even fuzzy socks! They’ll absolutely appreciate the care and effort that went into the gesture and feel so welcome at your home. If you know they enjoy reading, lending them a book for the duration of their stay is also a very thoughtful way to make sure they are comfortable.
Toiletries
Another thing you could provide for them, especially if they’ve travelled far, is some toiletries. Travel sized toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, and any other things you think they would use but may have forgotten in the rush would be a lovely thing to have waiting for them when they arrive to your home. At OHS, we offer a comprehensive range of stylish and colourful bathroom towels. Go the extra mile and treat your guest to a fresh set so that they can enjoy some elevated downtime while they get ready for the day.
Privacy
One overlooked aspect of this sleeping situation is how little privacy the person may have if they are crashing on your sofa, or your family has rearranged bedrooms. They may feel like they are imposing, even if you say they aren’t, and they may feel the effects of having much less privacy than they would have at home. Make sure that they have a bathroom that is easily accessible, or that they have their own free time to shower and get ready without feeling in the way. Privacy can also come in the way of the household being mindful of your guest and making sure things are quiet after a certain time.
It's not the easiest thing to have a guest when you have no spare room, but it can be made so much nicer for everyone with some careful thought and planning.
